The Big Gray Mess Media is a non-scripted documentary content studio founded by filmmaker Joel Woodman.

For more than a decade, TBGM Media has developed and produced nonfiction stories rooted in real lives and shaped by larger social forces. Intimate in scale but expansive in meaning, the work follows everyday people, families, and communities as they confront history, rebuild identity, and search for a way forward.

At the heart of every film is a human story — held with care, shaped by truth, and connected to something greater than itself.

Storytelling Approach

  • We focus on the stories that connect individual lives to defining cultural, political, and social events. The films do not begin with easy answers. They begin with people, the witnesses, survivors, builders, advocates, and families whose lives reveal the deeper human story behind the headline.

  • TBGM Media creates films that look beyond the issue and into the lives of those most affected by it. Our work explores what remains after war, disaster, policy, displacement, or injustice, using time, place, memory, and character to reveal how history is carried in everyday human moments often hiding in plain sight.

  • We tell stories about people who continue forward when history, policy, disaster, or circumstance has tried to define them. Our films look for inspiration in the lives of people often overlooked, everyday stories with the power to move, connect, and restore.

FOUNDER STORY

Joel Woodman is a documentary director, producer, and award winning creative storyteller with more than 20 years of experience across film, design, branded content, and nonfiction media.

As the founder of TBGM Media, he has spent the last decade creating documentary work focused on memory, justice, resilience, and the human experience behind complex social issues.

He lives in the Pacific Northwest atop a butte, with his wife, incredible daughter, and two adorable cats named Mackerel Bonito and Her Royal Duchess- Kiki Von Snugglesworth.
